And forth, let's talk about boot styles. Now I have just mentioned boots above but there are more specific categories to think about: ankle boots, mid-calf boots, knee boots and thigh-high boots. If you have to deal with deep snow, you should probably go for as tall a boot as you feel comfortable with and one that is as tight as possible around your legs; If any snow falls in, your feet will be wet and miserable all day. If you only get a few inches of snow or none at all, you can choose the boot height of your preference and style. Watch out for ankle boots though if you commonly see deep puddles, sometimes even those are not tall enough to keep your feet dry. If you prefer to wear your pants over your boots instead of tucked in, you may also want to make sure the boots are not too tall and poofy or you may spend the rest of the day pulling your pants back down around them. Likewise if you tuck your pants into your boots often, be sure the boots are wide enough to fit everything in.

Now check magazines, websites, trend sheetsand your favorite stores for the colors and styles that are popular this winter season and incorporate those into your winter picks too! Are you all thumbs, or completely in the dark when it comes to tying a necktie? You're not alone. Although it's an extremely important fashion skill for a well-dressed man, the real art of tying neckties seems to be lost in today's society.

There are, in fact, over 180 ways to tie a necktie. If that number sounds intimidating, relax. Most of these methods fell by the wayside decades ago and there are very few knots actually used today in most circles. Still, a necktie is a central part of dressing for success, and making it look right is equally as important. So, with all these options, what's the simple answer? It comes in a knot developed long ago by one of the oldest and most fashion-conscious societies of our world.

Remember the adage, "Necessity is the mother of invention"? British horsemen needed a way to tie their scarves while holding the reigns of four horses. This need was filled by a knot that could be quickly and easily tied with one hand while the horses were controlled with the other. Voila - or more appropriately, By Jove! The famous Four-in-Hand necktie knot was born.

Because of its simplicity, the Four-in-Hand knot is still in use today and is actually one of the most commonly used methods to tie a necktie. It creates a well-balanced, uniform knot that's easily adjusted for comfort and the size of the knot can be varied to match any outfit in your wardrobe. This time-tested knot can be mastered with very little practice and is very well suited for the novice. While it's easy enough to tie one handed, we recommend using both hands, unless, of course, you have horses to hold. It may be the only knot you ever need to tie your neckties.

"And how", you may well ask, "is it done?" As promised, quite simply: Start with your collar buttoned and flipped upward. Your tie should be draped right-side-out around your neck with the wide end at your dominant hand. (We'll assume here that you're right-handed, so southpaws will need to reverse these directions horizontally.) Leave a little more length on the wide end - you'll learn with practice how to adjust this for your height.

Pass the wide end over the narrow and back under it so it's pointing to your right and the seam is now out. Then pass it back over the narrow end again and upward through the loop you've formed around your neck. The wide end then comes down through the outer loop you formed around the narrow end. Grasp the narrow end, which should now be underneath the wide one, and slide the knot upward with your other hand to draw it tight.

That's it. Pulling the wide end downward will tighten the knot and make it smaller. Pull the narrow end to tighten it around your neck. If the knot doesn't appear completely symmetrical, don't panic, it's normal. Remember, this knot was created for simplicity. Tied loose, it creates a casual look and pulled more snugly it's acceptable for most formal occasions.

Practice a little and you'll soon find that you can tie the Four-in-Hand in just a few seconds. You'll be ready for that heavy date or your sister's wedding in no time!

Timeboxing

Timeboxing is a simple time management technique I use often. I first learned about it in software development terms. Lets say you have a fixed deadline for a new product you need to release, such as an annual upgrade to software for calculating income taxes. You must have a new version ready by a certain date. So youll probably use timeboxing for your development cycle, meaning that you do the best job you can within the time available. What new features you can implement are totally determined by the time frame. Slipping the schedule is simply not an option, so if you get behind, you must cut features.

In terms of managing your own tasks, timeboxing can be a helpful technique. I primarily use it in two different ways.

First, lets say you want to get something done, but theres a risk it could end up taking far more time than its worth because its the kind of task where you might exhibit perfectionist tendencies. So you give yourself a specific amount of time, which you wont go over, and you simpy do the best job you can within that time.

As an example I use timeboxing when doing my Christmas shopping each year. I usually allocate a total of 2 hours to the task, which for me involves buying gifts for 8 people (my wife handles the rest). I decide in advance what kind of gift I should get each person on my list, and then I order as much as I can online and then head off to the local mall, where I zoom from one store to the next picking up gifts as I go. I also usually take advantage of my flexible schedule, doing the shopping on a weekday morning when the stores arent busy and I dont have to wait in line. So Im in and out with everyones gifts in under two hours.

(I know some people love holiday shopping, and taking multiple trips to browse is fine if its something you enjoy. But if youre shopping-challenged like me, and youre no more likely to get gifts that are any better if you invest an extra 10 hours in the task, then it may be best to simply resign yourself to doing the best job you can within the time you have available.)

The second way I use timeboxing is when I have a task or project that I wish to complete, but I dont really know where to begin, or it seems like its going to be a long time before I can finish a meaningful chunk. Or maybe its something I find really tedious and would have a tendency to procrastinate on. Then I use timeboxing to simply commit to working on the task for a given period of time to make a dent in it. I normally use a period in the range of 30-120 minutes. I release any concern about reaching a particular milestone within that time I simply commit to putting in the time, regardless of how far I get. An example where I use this approach would be when Im writing a new article. Finishing a complete article will usually take me 3-8 hours. Sometimes I can complete an article in a single stretch, but most of the time Ill stretch it over multiple sessions. So I use timeboxing to just put a dent in the article and get started, committing myself to writing for 1-2 hours without worrying about how far I get. Then I just repeat the process until the work is complete.

A side effect of this last method is that Ill often end up working much longer than I originally intended. If I commit to working on a tedious task for just 30 minutes, its easy to get started because Ive given myself permission to stop after only 30 minutes. But once Ive overcome that inertia and am now focused on the task, 90 minutes may pass before I even feel the desire to stop.

Timeboxings ability to circumvent perfectionism and avoid procrastination makes it a useful time management technique. I even used it for this blog entry, and now that my wife has returned home with dinner and a movie rental, its time to say goodbye...
